What does a credit repair business really mean?

i want to know what credit repair company will help my credit score go up legally.

i have had terrible credit in the past and have being paying off most of my debts i am finally getting my head above water but everything i apply for even a switch card is being refused help needed! frustration setting in.

I want to remove the bankruptcy from my credit reports as soon as possible.

I am trying to raise my credit score quickly. Right now I am at 593-around 650 depending on agency. So, by paying off the 5 credit cards that I currently have(some with amounts ranging from 1,500-2,500), should that raise my credit score a fantastic deal? If not, will a credit repair company help or are they just a scam?
